Born in Porto in 1850 and deceased in Lisbon in 1893, António Carvalho da Silva Porto contributed to the naturalist renewal of Portuguese painting. After training at the Porto Academy, he travelled to Paris in 1873 with a state scholarship. He worked around Barbizon, met Daubigny at Auvers and continued his studies in Italy alongside Marques de Oliveira.
Returning to Portugal in 1879, he taught landscape painting at the Lisbon Academy, emphasising direct observation and work outdoors. He participated in the exhibitions of the Grupo do Leão. His landscapes, drawings and rural scenes reflect this close attention to the places he explored. The Soares dos Reis Museum holds his painting of women reapers, while the Sociedade Nacional de Belas-Artes preserves a collection of five hundred of his drawings.
