Born in Biberach in 1836 and dying in the same town in 1905, Anton Braith grew up in modest circumstances: his father, a day labourer who became a farmer, employed him as a child as a cowherd. A scholarship awarded in 1851 opened the way for him to pursue artistic training at the Stuttgart School of Arts, where he studied drawing under Bernhard von Neher, Heinrich von Rustige and Heinrich Funk.
Settling in Munich in 1860 with his fellow student Albert Kappis, Braith joined Christian Mali in the artists’ colonies of Branneburg, Pang and Aresing, where they painted from nature and outdoors. In 1867, he travelled to Paris with Mali, Kappis and Carl Ebert; later, Braith and Mali acquired a studio in Munich known by the nickname Schwabenburg. His travels also marked the course of his career: he travelled with Mali to Lake Constance in 1874, visited northern Germany in 1886, and went to Italy in 1884 and again in 1889.
The biographical source notes Braith’s success at several exhibitions and presents him as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. In 1892, he and Mali declined to join the Munich Secession, and he remained a member of the Munich artists’ association. Kühe vor einem vom Gebirgsbach zerstörten Steg, whose title describes cows in front of a footbridge destroyed by a mountain torrent, is an oil painting on relined canvas, 23.5 × 33 cm, signed at lower left. The work is listed in P. Beye’s Schwäbische Maler um 1900, published in 1964, with an illustration on page 31. According to the published provenance, it was acquired at Kunsthaus Bühler in Stuttgart in 1989 and was subsequently in a private collection in Westphalia.
