Born in 1931 in Lollar, Hesse, Heinz Mack studied fine art in Düsseldorf, then philosophy at the University of Cologne until 1956; he earned a state qualification in both disciplines. In 1957, he founded the ZERO movement in Düsseldorf with Otto Piene; Günther Uecker joined in 1961. Light is central to his non-figurative art. His work includes sculptures, reliefs and light objects, paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, mosaics and ceramics, as well as projects for public and interior spaces.
The importance he gives to light is also evident in the Sahara Project, conceived in 1959. From 1962, Mack installed «artificial gardens» in the African desert, comprising, among other things, sand reliefs, forms, mirrors, veils and light stelae. His projects in the Arctic in 1976 included floating sculptures in acrylic glass, prismatic pyramids and luminous forms.
In 1970, Mack represented Germany at the 35th Venice Biennale. He held a chair in Osaka and served as a full member of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin until 1992. In Venice, the sculptural ensemble The Sky Over Nine Columns was inaugurated in 2014 on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore: nine columns, each eight metres high, covered with golden tesserae. The monograph Mack – Sahara was published by Hirmer in 2022.
