Günther Uecker (1930–2025) turned the nail into a structural element of art: repetition transformed the surface and drew the viewer into an experience of light and relief. The German artist joined ZERO in 1961 and developed installations with Otto Piene and Heinz Mack in which movement and perception played essential roles. Their Hommage à Fontana appeared at documenta III in 1964. His activity extended beyond optical investigations, however. Theatre and opera provided settings for his stage designs and costumes, while other bodies of work addressed violence against human beings. The contemplation room in Berlin’s Reichstag bears witness to this meditative dimension. Ordinary materials, space and memory meet in his practice, which cannot be reduced to a single technique.
