The German artist Blinky Palermo was the artistic name of Peter Schwarze, who became Peter Heisterkamp after his adoption. Born in Leipzig on 2 June 1943, he died in Malé on 18 February 1977. After studying sculpture and printmaking in Münster, he entered the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts in 1962, where he studied under Joseph Beuys. It was during this period, in 1964, that he adopted the pseudonym Blinky Palermo.
His first solo exhibition took place in Munich in 1966. In 1973, he moved to New York, then returned to Düsseldorf in 1976; that same year, he took part in the Venice Biennale, the last exhibition participation mentioned in the source. Colour and the forms it takes are central to his practice.
A gouache on cardboard from around 1970, Ohne Titel (Graue Scheibe), measures 51 × 73 cm and serves as a model for prints titled Graue Scheibe, blaues Dreieck or 4 Prototypen. His meeting with the printer Helmut Laube in 1970 is presented as the moment when he resumed printmaking. It then became an important artistic medium, whose distinctive expressive qualities, despite thematic connections, differ from those of unique works. Palermo died in 1977 while on holiday in the Maldives.
