Marie Haushofer (1871–1940) was a German painter and poet born in Munich. The daughter of writer and professor Max Haushofer, granddaughter of a landscape painter and sister of artist Alfred Haushofer, she grew up in an artistic and literary environment. Her early work included portraits and landscapes. She later earned her living as a painter and copyist, particularly reproducing old master pictures in the Alte Pinakothek.
Her literary activity accompanied her involvement in Bavaria’s bourgeois women’s movement. A member of the Verein für Fraueninteressen, she wrote the pageant Zwölf Culturbilder aus dem Leben der Frau for the first Bavarian Women’s Congress in 1899. Its sequence of historical tableaux addressed women’s access to knowledge, work and independence. Her career therefore brought artistic practice and writing into contact with collective social action.
