Jamini Roy (1887–1972) was an Indian painter who developed an original form of modernism from the traditions of Bengal. Trained at the Government Art School in Calcutta within a European academic framework, he first became known as a portraitist. He subsequently redirected his practice towards folk art, village figures, terracotta reliefs and the religious narratives of his home region.
Strong black outlines, flat areas of colour and simplified forms give his images an immediately recognisable presence. Peasants, artisans, women, animals and deities constitute a repertoire explored through many variations. Roy also addressed Christian subjects in this personal language. Traditional pigments and popular visual models became part of his inquiry into how modern art could remain rooted in its cultural surroundings and communicate through widely familiar imagery.
This profile brings together identity references for Jamini Roy and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
