George Arthur Fripp (1813–1896), who was born in Bristol and died in London, worked within the British tradition of landscape watercolour. He visited Italy in 1834. He also served as secretary of the Society of Painters in Watercolours. During the 1860s, Queen Victoria commissioned him to make views around Balmoral, connecting his practice with the representation of Scottish scenery.
The Falls of the Glasallt, a watercolour dated 1860 in the Royal Collection, follows water descending a rocky hillside. Another sheet, dated September that year, takes its viewpoint from the Queen’s sitting room at Balmoral. These precisely identified locations contrast with the general title River Scene, a watercolour on paper held by the National Galleries of Scotland. Together, the sheets demonstrate his attention to particular sites and the courses of water.
