Domenico Fetti, born in Rome around 1589 and deceased in Venice in 1623, trained with Cigoli among others. In 1614 he moved to Mantua to serve Ferdinando Gonzaga and studied the ducal collections there. Alongside portraits, religious subjects and mythology, he produced small paintings of biblical parables that were widely copied during the seventeenth century.
The Parable of the Weeds at the Thyssen Museum, dated around 1622, introduces the evil sower into a landscape where labourers sleep. The Veil of Veronica in Washington instead concentrates the devotional image on a suffering face against a pale cloth. In the Getty's Portrait of a Man with a Sheet of Music, around 1620, the sitter's identity remains uncertain: perhaps a singer or actor, presented with an informal, familiar presence.
This profile brings together identity references for Domenico Fetti and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
