Miriam Schapiro (1923–2015), born in Toronto, studied at the University of Iowa, receiving her MFA in 1949. She moved to New York in 1952 with her husband, the artist Paul Brach. In 1971 she established the Feminist Art Program at the California Institute of the Arts with Judy Chicago, linking teaching closely to her artistic practice.
She presented Dollhouse as part of Womanhouse in 1972. Through painting, sculpture, prints and multimedia collage, she questioned the hierarchies separating fine art from craft and the gender distinctions underpinning them. Returning to New York in 1974, she continued this dialogue with the history of women artists. Popova, made in 1992 for the portfolio Delaunay, Goncharova, Popova and Me, is held by the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
This profile brings together identity references for Miriam Schapiro and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
