Emanuel Glicen Romano

Born : 1897Died : 1984Documented citizenships : United States

Born in Rome, Emanuel Glicenstein Romano (1897–1984) pursued a career spanning Italy, the United States and Israel. Arriving in New York with his father in 1926, he adopted the name Romano to establish a distinct artistic identity. His training included the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1936 he worked as a mural painter for the Federal Art Project. During the Second World War and its aftermath, he addressed the Holocaust through a series of allegorical images; one is held by the Florida Holocaust Museum. Portraiture was another aspect of his practice, including his 1950 portrait of Onya La Tour. In 1953 he settled in Safed to establish a museum in his father’s memory.
