The German artist Günter Fruhtrunk, born and deceased in Munich, initially studied architecture at the Technische Hochschule in that city. In 1945, he began artistic training with William Straube, painter and printmaker, in Neufrach. His first exhibition was held in 1947 at the Kunstspiegel gallery in Freiburg im Breisgau. A scholarship from the State of Baden-Württemberg and the French government enabled him to continue his career; in 1955, he went to Paris to work in the studios of Fernand Léger and Hans Arp. He received the Jean-Arp Prize in Cologne in 1961, followed by the silver medal of the Prix d’Europe in Ostend in 1966. The following year, he became a professor at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts.
The published provenance for this painting lists the artist’s estate, Galerie Lahumière in Paris, and then a private collection in southern Germany. His works are held in the collections of the Centre Pompidou, Kunstsammlung NRW, the Lenbachhaus in Munich and the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, among others.
This profile brings together identity references for Günter Fruhtrunk and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
