The French painter Joseph Garibaldi, born and deceased in Marseille, anchors a significant part of his work in the landscapes and ports of the Provençal coast. He paints regularly in Cassis between 1884 and 1899, and also works in La Ciotat, Saint-Cyr, Bandol, Sanary and Toulon. The Vieux-Port remains a recurring subject: from his successive studios on the Quai de Rive-Neuve, he depicts its ships and activities. These harbour scenes are joined by views of sites and monuments, placing his painting within a geography that is both local and open to the other landscapes of the Midi.
After Louis Prat recognised his talent, Garibaldi was enrolled at the École des beaux-arts de Marseille. His encounter with Antoine Vollon is presented as decisive: on Vollon’s advice, he began exhibiting at the Salon. He took part from 1884 to 1914, receiving an honourable mention in 1887, followed by a second-class medal in 1897. Until 1905, Baron Alphonse de Rothschild supported his work by buying his paintings and donating some to provincial museums. Garibaldi showed landscapes at the Exposition coloniale de Marseille in 1906; the following year, he received a travel grant for Tunisia.
His travels took him notably to Corsica, Venice, Savoy and Ariège, without weakening his attachment to the Rive-Neuve district. After the First World War, he stayed regularly in Fos-sur-Mer and painted the landscapes of the Camargue. His practice of photography informed his choice of framing; his compositions often leave broad areas in the foreground and are organised according to the principle of folded-back sides. Works are recorded at the Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence and the Musée des beaux-arts de Marseille, including La Porte d’Aude à Carcassonne (1897) and Intérieur d’atelier (1889). According to the source, the Pinacothèque nationale d’Athènes holds several paintings, including La cathédrale de Marseille and L’entrée du port de Marseille. His work was presented, among other occasions, in the exhibition Joseph Garibaldi, le Midi paisible, organised at the Palais des Arts de Marseille in 2012, which brought together around one hundred paintings and drawings. The Fondation Regards de Provence published a catalogue raisonné devoted to the painter in the same year.
