The French painter and caricaturist Eugène Cottin (1841–1902) works in several fields: painting, humorous drawing for the press and book illustration. He trains at the École des beaux-arts de Paris under Léon Bonnat and Léon-Victor Dupré, and makes his debut at the Salon de Paris in 1879. His painting addresses animal and military subjects. L’Atelier de Victor Dupré, rue de Paradis à Paris, dated circa 1873, is described as an ink work on tracing paper mounted on cardboard and remains attributed with reservations.
In the press, he contributes notably to Le Chat Noir, La Fronde, Le Sifflet and Gil Blas; he also produces illustrations for books. In 1900, Plon publishes his collection of judicial caricatures, Drôleries du Palais : album humoristique.
Works held in public collections attest to the diversity of his subjects and techniques: the Musée Louis-Senlecq in L’Isle-Adam holds Chouette, nous coupons à la corvée, a work in Indian ink. The Musée d’art moderne et contemporain de Strasbourg, for its part, holds Deux Turcs debout, an oil painting on wood.
This profile brings together identity references for Eugène Cottin and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
