Andro Wekua

Born in Georgia in 1977 and based in Berlin, Andro Wekua develops a practice spanning collage, painting, sculpture, installation and film. This diversity of media is accompanied by a staging process in which the exhibition space plays a full part in the composition. Architectural interventions, the arrangement of sculptures and paintings, wall colours, floor coverings and lighting organise spatial and atmospheric scenarios. The exhibition thus becomes a constructed arrangement in which the works and their environment are considered together.
In some two-dimensional works, photographs serve as fragments of visual memory. Wekua first incorporates them into collages on paper, then transfers them by silkscreen printing onto aluminium panels. He applies and removes highly pigmented oil paints, altering the backgrounds, blurring details or adding new ones. According to the gallery, this process condenses several layers of time into a single image. Levan Portrait (2017) and E. Mirrored Window (2018) are among these works.
His films, described as enigmatic, at times surreal, visual compositions, work with image, colour, editing and music to create dense atmospheres. All is Fair in Dreams and War (2018), a 5-minute-and-5-second colour stereo projection, features a soundtrack by Joerg Hiller. The installation Get out of my room dates from 2006. The sculpture Untitled (2014) depicts a figure with jerky movements, made in part from silicone, wax, fabric and synthetic materials, and incorporating mechanisms. In Dolphin in the Fountain (2017–22), nickel silver, hand-painted bronzes and steel are set alongside a fountain mechanism.
