Andreas Brandt

Born : 1935Died : 2016Documented citizenships : Germany

German painter Andreas Brandt, born in 1935 and deceased in 2016, moved to Berlin in 1955 to study art. His first solo exhibition was held in 1970 at Galerie Peuckert in Cologne.

His approach focuses on colour conceived as an autonomous form and on the tensions it establishes with other forms within the rectangular field. Sabine Weder Arlitt emphasises the essential role of these relationships: in her view, a band cannot exist on its own in his paintings. Brandt is generally associated with the Swiss artists of Concrete Art, notably Max Bill and Camille Graeser.

The titles of his works offer a few points of reference for his practice: «Grau und Blau» is signed and dated «Brandt ’79» on the reverse, while «Dunkelblau mit Rot», from 1994, is an oil and acrylic painting on canvas, measuring 810 × 458 mm.

This profile brings together identity references for Andreas Brandt and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
