Atul Dodiya, born in Bombay in 1959, is an Indian artist whose work brings different visual traditions into dialogue. He graduated from the Sir J. J. School of Art in 1982 and continued his training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1991–1992. His practice encompasses paintings on canvas, watercolours and works on metal shop shutters. Popular culture, cinema, literature, personal memories and political history intersect in his imagery. Indian and Western references form layered compositions that also question the surfaces on which paintings appear. Shop shutters, in particular, blur the boundaries between the street and the museum. In 2001, the Japan Foundation presented Bombay: Labyrinth/Laboratory in Tokyo, curated by Ranjit Hoskote. In 2002, Madrid’s Museo Reina Sofía exhibited five shutter paintings in E.T. y los otros. These exhibitions illuminate an approach to urban experience, memory and storytelling through the movement of images between different contexts.
