André Elbaz

Born : 1934Documented citizenships : Canada · France · Morocco

Theatre, drawing and the transformation of paper run through the career of André Elbaz, born in El Jadida in 1934. His earliest collages served as theatre posters before painting and film became further fields of investigation. He represented Morocco at the Paris Biennale in 1961 and made La nuit n’est jamais complète in 1966 using drawings and an oratorio by Schoenberg. His therapeutic work subsequently combined theatre and drawing through pictodrama. From 1986, learning papermaking accompanied his return to visual art. Dyed and assembled sisal and abaca fibres bring silhouettes into view. An exhibition in Madrid of urns containing fragmented drawings in 2013 extended this exploration of the artwork’s transformation.

This profile brings together identity references for André Elbaz and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
