Romanian painter Alexandru Ciucurencu (1903–1977) began an apprenticeship in a Tulcea studio at thirteen. He then studied at the Bucharest School of Fine Arts with George Demetrescu-Mirea and Camil Ressu, and attended the plein-air school in Baia Mare. Between 1930 and 1932, he continued his training in Paris at the Académie Julian and André Lhote’s studio. His feeling for colour is evident in still lifes, landscapes and paintings of women in interiors. Around 1940, his compositions became denser and more concentrated. After the war, he adapted to the requirements of Socialist Realism and taught at the Nicolae Grigorescu Institute in Bucharest. The Chess Players, held by the Brukenthal Museum in Sibiu, provides an example of his figurative painting.
This profile brings together identity references for Alexandru Ciucurencu and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
