Rita Kernn-Larsen (1904–1998), born in Hillerød and deceased in Copenhagen, was a Danish painter associated with Surrealism. After training in Oslo and Copenhagen, she moved to Paris in 1929 and studied with Fernand Léger. Returning to Denmark in 1934, she joined the Surrealist circle and participated in its international exhibitions. Peggy Guggenheim gave her a solo exhibition at her London gallery in 1938.
Her compositions combine memory, dreams and metamorphosis through automatic drawing. Self-Portrait, also titled Know Thyself, painted in 1937, connects facial features with plant forms. After the war she settled in Saint-Jeannet in southern France. Her painting subsequently turned towards nature and abstraction, while she also experimented with ceramics and collage.
This profile brings together identity references for Rita Kernn-Larsen and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
