Jacob Salomonsz. van Ruysdael (about 1629–1681) was a landscape painter born in Haarlem. The son of Salomon van Ruysdael, he belonged to an important family within seventeenth-century Dutch painting. He should be distinguished from his cousin Jacob Isaacksz. van Ruisdael, whose fame has often overshadowed his own career. Trained in his father’s circle, he first worked in Haarlem and is recorded in Amsterdam by 1666.
His production includes wooded landscapes and rugged settings enlivened by water. The National Gallery in London holds A Waterfall by a Cottage in a Hilly Landscape, a signed oil on canvas. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen also owns a landscape by him. These documented works provide access to his practice beyond the changing attributions of the art market.
This profile brings together identity references for Jacob Salomonsz van Ruysdael and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
