Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart builds a geometric language from simple elements: his compositions bring together verticals and horizontals, primary colours and greys, followed by diagonals. Oblique lines recur in his work, where the triangle associated with the oblique occupies a privileged place; echoes of collage also appear on the canvas.
From 1919, he studied sculpture and architecture in Hanover; another source also mentions interior design. He lived in Hanover from 1919 to 1935, a period punctuated by numerous journeys, and founded the abstract group K there in 1924 with Hans Nitzschke. In Paris, he participated in Cercle et Carré in 1930, then in Abstraction-Création, which one source identifies him as a founding member of in 1931.
Forced to settle in Holland in 1938, he returned to Germany in 1955 to teach at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm. Komposition Nr. 143, made in 1943, is an oil on canvas measuring 60 × 80 cm. According to the labels on the reverse of this work, it was presented at the Städtische Kunsthalle in Mannheim in 1970, at the Ulm museum in 1975, and then in the exhibition Bilanz at the Erker-Galerie in St. Gallen in 1979.
