The figure of Christ holds an important place in the work of German painter and illustrator Heinrich Johann Michael Ferdinand Hofmann (1824–1911). Born in Darmstadt, he received his first lessons there from the engraver Ernst Rauch before studying in Düsseldorf and Antwerp. His stay in Italy, begun in 1854, allowed him to examine paintings by Giorgione and Bellini in Venice and by Giotto in Padua. He settled in Dresden in 1862 and became a professor at its Academy of Fine Arts in 1870. Alongside portraits, he produced altarpieces and religious compositions. Riverside Church in New York holds Christus und der reiche Jüngling and Christus in Gethsemane, dated 1889 and 1890 respectively.
This profile brings together identity references for Heinrich Hofmann and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
