Eugène Ionesco, born Eugen Dimitri Ionescu in Slatina in 1909 and died in Paris in 1994, was a Romanian-French playwright and French-language writer. He began studying French in Bucharest in 1928, completed his studies in 1934, and then taught at various schools and training institutions. He obtained French nationality in 1950. From 1935, he developed his first play, The Bald Soprano, from the exercise sentences in the Assimil method; it was staged in 1950.
With Rhinoceros, published by Gallimard in 1959, Ionesco expressed his horror at forms of totalitarianism. The play was first performed in German translation in Düsseldorf in November 1959, then premiered in French in Paris in January 1960. In 1962, Notes and Counter Notes, a collection of articles and lectures devoted to his theatre, was published. He also tried his hand at writing a novel and completed The Hermit in 1973. In 1975, he presented The Man with the Suitcases, described as his last play. Towards the end of his life, he somewhat set writing aside in favour of painting.
