Louis Gurlitt was a landscape painter whose career connected German and Danish artistic circles. Born in Altona and initially trained in Hamburg, he entered the Royal Danish Academy in 1832, studying under Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg among others. A silver medal in 1833 and admission to the Academy as a member in 1840 marked this relationship with Copenhagen. His travels also took him to Munich and Italy.
Marina Piccola, Capri, painted in Rome in 1844 and now in Stockholm’s Nationalmuseum, shows how Italian subjects informed his studio pictures. A View of Cavi in the Sabine Hills, dated 1848 and held by the Metropolitan Museum, combines graphite with white gouache highlights. His Landscape with a Castle on the River Etsch uses oil on paper mounted on canvas. Together these works document the varied materials of his landscape practice.
This profile brings together identity references for Louis Gurlitt and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
