Cella Thoma, also known as Bonicella, was a painter of flowers and still lifes. In Munich she modelled for Victor Müller, through whom she met Hans Thoma. She became Thoma’s pupil and married him in Säckingen in 1877. The couple then moved to Frankfurt, and later to Karlsruhe in 1899.
Her painting Alpenrosen, dated 1875 and held by the Städel Museum, is a small oil on paper measuring 13.3 by 21.4 centimetres. It bears the monogram cTh. and abbreviated date 75 at the lower left. It entered the museum in 1938 with the Hans Thoma collection of Otto Eiser and Eduard Küchler. Cella also appears in her husband’s work: in La Giardiniera, painted by Hans Thoma in 1881, the flowers may evoke her own artistic practice.
This profile brings together identity references for Cella Thoma and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
