Gregorio Sciltian was a painter born in Rostov-on-Don who became a figure in twentieth-century Italian art and died in 1985. His figurative work engages with older painting traditions, particularly through portraiture and still life. Descriptive precision and illusion are central concerns, exemplified by the large painting L’Eterna illusione from the late 1960s, in the collection of the Vittoriale degli Italiani.
Between 1947 and 1949, Sciltian participated in the Pittori moderni della realtà alongside Pietro Annigoni and the brothers Antonio and Xavier Bueno. The group defended continuity with earlier masters and exhibited in several Italian cities. The Mart holds a Natura morta of 1935 in the VAF Stiftung collection. At the Vittoriale, his paintings, the old master works he collected and his personal archives provide complementary evidence for studying his artistic career.
