Pietro Benvenuti was born in Arezzo in 1769 and died in Florence in 1844. He was an important figure in Tuscan neoclassical painting. As director of the Florentine Academy and a court painter, he worked within the visual representation of political power. Elisa Bonaparte Surrounded by Artists in Florence, painted in 1813 and held at Versailles, gathers the sovereign, her court and the artists she supported, with Antonio Canova central to the ceremony.
At the Pitti Palace, the Hercules Room frescoes, executed between 1817 and 1829, translate this ambition into monumental decoration. Episodes involving the ancient hero celebrate the rule of Ferdinand III of Lorraine. Prepared through numerous drawings, the compositions combine figures inspired by Canova’s sculpture with an approach to colour informed by Venetian painting.
This profile brings together identity references for Pietro Benvenuti and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
