Nikos Kessanlis

Born : 1930Died : 2004Documented citizenships : Greece

Nikos Kessanlis (1930–2004), born in Thessaloniki and deceased in Athens, progressively expanded the means of producing an image. He trained with Nikos Nikolaou, among others, then studied with Yiannis Moralis at the Athens School of Fine Arts from 1950 to 1955. After his first Athens exhibition in 1955, he moved to Rome on a scholarship from the Istituto Centrale del Restauro. His works exhibited in 1957 approach the gestural abstraction of Art Informel. Incorporating newspapers, fabrics and everyday materials, he moved away from traditional painting. Settling in Paris in 1961, he entered the milieu of Nouveau Réalisme. His explorations extended into space and subsequently to photomechanical processes, transforming both the structure of images and how they were made.

This profile brings together identity references for Nikos Kessanlis and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
