Till Freiwald

Till Freiwald, born in Lima in 1963, studied at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts from 1985 to 1991. His career subsequently took him to Saint-Étienne and Brussels before he settled in Mecklenburg. Initially concerned with abstraction, he turned to portraiture as a space for encounter and the investigation of perception.
His monumental watercolours begin with direct contact with the sitter. Photographs and small studies precede enlargement, which he executes from memory: likeness is thus filtered through the artist’s inner vision. Repeatedly returning to the same face gradually transforms its image. His investigations also extend to urban views. He participated in Portraiture Now: Drawing on the Edge, presented at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington from 2012.
