Jules Olitski

Documented citizenships : United States

The American painter Jules Olitski, who lived from 1922 to 2007, developed an abstraction centred on relationships between colour and surface. In 1965 he began applying acrylic paint with a spray gun. Spraying allowed him to vary pigment density and create transitions without sharp outlines. Love Accepted, dated that year and held by Princeton University Art Museum, demonstrates this investigation of an almost uninterrupted field of colour.

He also concentrated certain accents at the edges of the painting, sometimes marked by a painted stripe or pastel line. Prince Patutsky’s Command, from 1966, belongs to the National Gallery of Australia. This painting and Unlocked, now at the National Gallery of Art, were cut from the same length of sprayed canvas.

This profile brings together identity references for Jules Olitski and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
