Henricus Johannes Melis (1845–1923) was born in Sas van Gent and died in Rotterdam, where he had studied at the Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten. His painting combines genre scenes and landscape and is associated with the influence of the Hague School. This dual orientation allows room for both the natural environment and figures drawn from daily life. His participation in exhibitions in Amsterdam and The Hague is documented between 1869 and 1903. He also taught, with F. H. Broeksmit and J. A. de Graaff among his pupils. An oil landscape and a winter scene showing an elderly woman in the snow, held by Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, illustrate the two sides of this repertoire.
This profile brings together identity references for Henricus Johannes Melis and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
