Édouard Manet

Born : 1832Died : 1883Documented citizenships : France

Édouard Manet (1832–1883) trained with Thomas Couture and copied old masters at the Louvre. His modern scenes renewed painting’s subjects and provoked criticism, notably with Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe and Olympia. Close to the Impressionists, he nevertheless did not participate in their group exhibitions. His work extends beyond these celebrated paintings: still lifes, religious scenes, races, portraits and seascapes reveal the diversity of his investigations. The Art Institute of Chicago’s collection allows several aspects to be traced, from Fish (Still Life), dated 1864, to The Races at Longchamp of 1866 and Portrait of Berthe Morisot with a Fan of 1874. The museum also devoted an exhibition to his printmaking practice in 1985.

This profile brings together identity references for Édouard Manet and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
