Trained at the Brera Academy under Francesco Hayez, Achille Dovera (1838–1895) initially explored historical subjects and the Risorgimento before concentrating on landscape. His career connected Italian artistic circles with France, where his presence is recorded as early as 1865. Normandy became a regular subject between 1871 and 1895. Coastal views, maritime scenes and Italian and foreign landscapes formed a repertoire shaped by travel. L’Isola Bella, dated 1885, and Ritorno dalla pesca, from 1875, illustrate his complementary interests in places and human activity. Dovera participated in exhibitions organised by the Promotrice in Genoa and in the National Exhibition in Naples, as well as events in Milan, Turin and Venice.
