The seventeenth-century Dutch landscape painter Aernout van der Neer—also known as Aert or Artus—is associated with winter landscapes and nocturnal scenes. From the mid-1640s, he developed a focused repertoire comprising snowstorms, sunrises and sunsets, as well as nocturnal landscapes; his winter scenes are noted as being influenced by Hendrick Avercamp. Colour and light enabled him to evoke different atmospheres and weather conditions. Born in Gorinchem in 1603 or 1604 and deceased in Amsterdam on 9 November 1677, he spent his childhood in Arkel, near Gorinchem, where he worked as steward to the lord of Arkel. He settled in Amsterdam around 1632.
His first known painting, dated 1632, is a genre painting in the style of Peter Quast, now held at the National Gallery in Prague. The first known landscape dates from 1633 and also bears Jochem Camphuysen’s signature. According to the source, his first independent work shows the influence of Rafael Camphuysen and Jan van Goyen. Several works in public collections provide points of reference for this body of work. Evening River Scene, dated around 1640, belongs to the Wallace Collection in London; Moonlit Landscape with Bridge, painted between 1648 and 1650, is held at the National Gallery of Art in Washington. Games on the Frozen River, around 1660, is at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, while Moonlight Fishing, dated 1665–1670, is held at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. As painting alone did not provide sufficient income, van der Neer opened the De Graeff van Hollant tavern on Kalverstraat in 1659; it closed in 1662 following bankruptcy. His son Eglon van der Neer also worked as a painter.
This profile brings together identity references for Aert van der Neer and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
