Giuseppe Palizzi was an Italian painter whose career linked Naples and France. He trained with Anton Sminck Pitloo and then Gabriele Smargiassi, exhibiting historical landscapes in a Romantic vein at the Biennale Borbonica. Settling in France in 1844, he worked in the forest of Fontainebleau and befriended Millet, Díaz de la Peña, Rousseau and Jacque. Landscapes and animals occupy an important place in his painting. In 1856, the state commissioned him to depict the flocks at the Rambouillet sheep farm. The Musée d’Orsay holds Béliers, dated 1852, and Le Printemps. La Vallée de Chevreuse, painted in 1849, is in the collection of the Musée Rolin in Autun.
