Francesco Londonio, who lived from 1723 to 1783, was a Milanese painter and etcher specialising in animals and rural life. His shepherds, peasants and herds inhabit a pastoral world in which familiar gestures structure the compositions. The Pinacoteca di Brera holds oil studies on paper made between 1760 and 1765, showing how he prepared and developed individual figures.
This workshop collection, transferred to Brera in 1837, contains rapid sketches alongside more finished studies, some associated with journeys to Rome and Naples. An etching of 1765 in the British Museum depicts a woman setting down a swaddled infant beside a young girl and a cat. Partly coloured by hand, the sheet connects observation of domestic life with printed imagery and the careful application of colour.
This profile brings together identity references for Francesco Londonio and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
