Born in Malta in 1816 and deceased in Istanbul in 1882, Amedeo Preziosi settled in the Ottoman capital in 1842. His watercolours describe coffeehouses, shops, markets and everyday activities, paying attention to clothing and the diversity of the city’s inhabitants. Views of the Bosporus complement this urban repertoire. The circulation of his images among travellers continued through the lithographic album Stamboul Recollections of Eastern Life, published in Paris in 1858.
A Turkish Coffee-House, Constantinople, dated 1854, belongs to the Victoria and Albert Museum. The cathedral museum in Mdina also holds a Turkish Bazaar signed and dated 1854. The Grand Bazaar at the Pera Museum demonstrates that he worked in oil on canvas too. These works connect descriptions of places with observations of the gestures and encounters that animate them.
This profile brings together identity references for Amedeo Preziosi and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
