Known as Adolf Mosengel, Konrad Heinrich Adolf Mosengel (1837–1885) was a German landscape painter born in Hamburg. His education took him to Düsseldorf, where he studied with Hans Gude from 1854 to 1857, then to Paris and to Geneva, where he worked with Alexandre Calame. He subsequently settled in Hamburg. These different places of training accompanied a practice centred on landscape, with subjects ranging from the Alps to Westphalia. He found motifs near his home and continued travelling, notably to the lakes of northern Italy. Lakeside views and mountain settings consequently connect his journeys with his painting. His career combined an international education and continuing travel with a lasting attachment to his native city.
