Gustave Moreau (1826–1898), born and deceased in Paris, was a major figure in Symbolism. He trained in François-Édouard Picot’s studio and at the École des beaux-arts before becoming close to Théodore Chassériau. His Italian journey from 1857 to 1859 deepened his knowledge of the old masters, whose works he copied in Rome, Florence and Venice.
His biblical and mythological subjects became richly ornamented visions, opening narratives to spiritual and poetic meanings. Oedipus and the Sphinx, exhibited at the Salon of 1864, and The Apparition in 1876 mark this exploration. A professor at the École des beaux-arts from 1892, he taught Matisse, Rouault and Marquet. He converted his house on Rue de La Rochefoucauld to preserve his work and bequeathed it to the state, establishing the future Musée Gustave Moreau.
This profile brings together identity references for Gustave Moreau and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
