Hermann Goepfert (1926–1982), born in Bad Nauheim and deceased in Antwerp, was a German artist associated with the ZERO movement. Trained at Frankfurt’s Städelschule, he placed light at the centre of his investigations. His white paintings, followed by reliefs and aluminium reflectors, incorporate actual illumination, shadows and changing viewpoints.
The work no longer remains confined to a painted surface: it operates in space and changes with its surroundings. The Optophonien add sound to light and movement. Goepfert participated in documenta III in Kassel in 1964. From 1965, his collaboration with the architect Johannes Peter Hölzinger extended this research to architectural and landscape scales, notably through the redesign of Karlsruhe’s palace park for the Federal Garden Show in 1967.
This profile brings together identity references for Hermann Goepfert and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
