Attilio Pratella

Born : 1856Died : 1949Documented citizenships : Italy

The Italian painter Attilio Pratella, born in Lugo in 1856 and deceased in Naples in 1949, spent most of his life in the latter city. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna and joined the one in Naples in 1880 on a scholarship. He remained in Naples until the end of his life.

During his studies in Naples, he earned a living as a ceramic decorator at the Cacciapuoti factory. Invaluable describes him as a much-sought-after landscape painter. The subjects noted include views of the Bay of Naples, linking his work to the landscape of the city where he settled. His landscapes are reported to have been exhibited at the Venice Biennale and the Paris Salon, with no dates specified.

In 1902, he was appointed honorary professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. The Gallery of Modern Art in Florence, the Museo d’Arte in Ravenna, the Gallery of Modern Art in Milan and the Capodimonte Museum in Naples are among the institutions cited as holding his works. Two bibliographical works are devoted to him: one by Alfredo Schettini, published in Naples in 1954, and one by Enzo Savoia, published in Bologna in 2007 under the title *Attilio Pratella : il narratore dei mille volti di Napoli*.
