Émilie Charmy

Born : 1878Died : 1974Documented citizenships : France

Émilie Charmy’s work brings together landscapes, flowers, self-portraits and female nudes. Within this body of work, the landscapes of Corsica offer a documented stylistic point of reference: in «Piana, Corse», colour spreads across broad areas, while the drawing, lightly developed, is barely sketched and emphasised by black outlines. In Paris, she exhibited eight works at the Salon des indépendants in 1903 and returned there every year until 1910; from 1905, Berthe Weill regularly presented her work, until 1923.

She established her studio at 54, rue de Bourgogne in 1910. The following year, the Galerie Eugène Druet devoted her first major solo exhibition to her: forty canvases and twenty-five watercolours were shown, mainly landscapes of Corsica painted in 1906 and 1910. In 1913, Druet presented her «Vue de l’Estaque», dated 1906, at the Armory Show in New York. In 1921, Count Étienne de Jouvencel organised a solo exhibition of the artist’s work at a gallery on rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honoré. Three years later, twenty of her canvases were brought together at the Galerie d’Art ancien et moderne for an exhibition about which Colette wrote. Female nudes constitute a significant part of her output; the biographical source notes that many of them adopt erotic poses.

Works recorded in public collections include «Paysage de Corse», «Les pivoines» and «Nature morte aux bananes» at the musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon; the musée Paul-Dini in Villefranche-sur-Saône holds, among others, «Portrait sur fond vert» (1902), «Piana» (1906) and an «Autoportrait» (1923). The Musée national des châteaux de Versailles et de Trianon also records a portrait of Aristide Briand dated 1932. The musée Paul-Dini devoted an exhibition to her from 2008 to 2009; another exhibition entitled «Émilie Charmy» was presented at the Fralin Museum of Art in Charlottesville from 2013 to 2014.
