George Engleheart is a miniature painter whose clientele includes aristocrats and numerous courtiers of the English court; he paints twenty-five portraits of George III. Having studied successively under George Barret and Sir Joshua Reynolds, he exhibits at the Royal Academy in London and opens his studio in 1773. He remains active there until 1813. Engleheart lives on Hertford Street in Mayfair until his retirement.
The portraits of John Dyer Collier, dated around 1785, of Mrs William Hayley, around 1790, and of Colonel Cuppage, in 1806, mark his work across several decades. He also reproduces miniatures by Reynolds; according to the source, some of these copies are sometimes the only surviving record of the original works. The fashion for eye miniature portraits, practised between 1785 and 1830 in England, France and Sweden, is attributed to him alongside Richard Cosway.
The transmission of his expertise continues with his nephew John Cox Dillman Engleheart, whom he trains in miniature painting. A monograph devoted to the artist, George Engleheart 1750-1829 Miniature Painter to George III, is published in 1902 by G. C. Williamson and H. L. D. Engleheart. Engleheart dies in Blackheath on 21 March 1829.
