A portrait painter, but also a poet and musician, Johann Jakob Serr (1807–1880) is presented as a German artist born in Rhodt, in the Palatinate, and who died in Heidelberg. In Herbstfest bei Rhodt, he depicts the departure of the grape harvesters and the wine-growing family after the grape harvest; Bacchus, the personification of the god of wine, sits on the last barrel of must. Ludger Tekampe describes this autumn festival as an idealised evocation that elevates rural life rather than conveying its reality.
Works associated with his name in the museum-digital directory include a self-portrait, a double portrait of the artist with his wife, and entries titled Das Mädchen aus der Fremde and Charlotte Kölsch.
This profile brings together identity references for Johann Jakob Serr and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
