Georges Seurat (1859–1891) developed a painting method informed by contemporary research into optics and colour. By placing small touches side by side, he sought an optical mixture that he believed could produce brighter, more intense hues. This approach, associated with Pointillism, accompanied a considered construction of figures and space. His subjects belong to modern life, but their arrangement also refers to ancient sculpture and Italian Renaissance frescoes. A Sunday on La Grande Jatte — 1884, painted in 1884–1886, combines this ambition with a monumental scale and simplified figures. Held by the Art Institute of Chicago, the painting received a painted border in 1888–1889, extending the artist’s chromatic investigations beyond the scene itself.
This profile brings together identity references for Georges Seurat and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
