Pierre Boucherle

Born : 1894Died : 1988Documented citizenships : France

Pierre Boucherle (1894–1988) was a French painter born in Tunis, where he studied at the fine arts school. His early satirical drawings were intended for the local press. His career later took him to Paris, where he met Modigliani, Derain and Kisling, among others. A scholarship enabled him to study art in Spain in 1923. He played a part in the formation of the École de Tunis and produced landscapes, nudes and still lifes. His practice extended to large decorative projects: in 1951, he directed the decoration of the lycée in Carthage around a Mediterranean theme. He subsequently worked at the Maison de la Tunisie in Paris and designed a large tapestry woven in Aubusson.
