Jeroen Henneman studied at the School of Applied Arts in Amsterdam and the Institute of Fine Arts in Antwerp. He lives and works in Amsterdam. Over the years, his work has moved towards painting while retaining the appearance of drawing: his canvases seem drawn rather than painted. Recurring motifs noted include illuminated windows in the dark and floating geometric forms accompanied by fictitious shadows. Architecture also has a regular place in his work. In compositions described as recent, façades and groups of buildings are rendered in closely packed areas of colour, where contour and rhythm structure the image.
His “standing drawings” extend this exploration beyond the canvas: the lines of a pencil drawing are transferred onto wood, then the sawn pieces are assembled. Only a few centimetres thick, these works combine the three-dimensional presence of the object with the flatness of drawing. A work from 1966, “Henneman in Search of Lost Time XIV”, signed and made with coloured pencil and pencil on paper, measures 305 × 235 mm. Among the exhibition venues cited are Galerie de la Madeleine in Brussels, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and Kunsthalle Bern. Artpeers states that his work is held in museum, corporate and private collections.
