Abraham Mignon (1640–1679), a German-Dutch painter from Frankfurt, devoted his work to still life. Training with Jacob Marrell and subsequent activity in Utrecht placed him within a setting where flower and fruit painting flourished. Jan Davidsz. de Heem provided an important reference for his compositions.
Mignon notably practised woodland still life, bringing plants, flowers, insects and small animals together in precisely arranged settings. Beneath their natural appearance, these paintings depend on carefully orchestrated construction. Comparisons in Magdalena Kraemer-Noble’s catalogue raisonné, published in 2007, relate such compositions to works held in Ansbach and at Smith College. Attention to individual species and contrasting textures combines with the pictorial organisation of a dense natural world whose elements have been deliberately and artificially assembled.
This profile brings together identity references for Abraham Mignon and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
