Loustal, the professional name of Jacques de Loustal, builds narratives through colour and a distinctive relationship between image and text. Trained in architecture, he began in the fanzine Cyclone before drawing for Rock & Folk, where he met Philippe Paringaux. His comics often favour narrative captions over speech balloons. Direct colour, brushwork, ink and charcoal form a vocabulary informed by painting and cinema, with references ranging from Fauvism to Wim Wenders. His literary collaborators include Jérôme Charyn, Jean-Luc Coatalem and Tonino Benacquista. Alongside this work, he contributes to the press, notably through New Yorker covers, and to cinema. In D’après Anita Conti, published in 2024, he explores relationships between photography and drawing.
This profile brings together identity references for Jacques de Loustal and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
